What Are You Worth?

2008 is already shaping up to be a controversial year

2008 is already shaping up to be a controversial year, full of unexpected events – nationally, internationally and even personally, in your own business.

One thing remains constant: You are where you are and what you are because of yourself. The amount that you are earning today is the exact amount that you have decided to earn, no more and no less.

When I first learned this, many years ago, I was sure that it was wrong. How could I be responsible for my own income if my income was determined by my boss, the customers, my sales, the market, the competition, the national economy and a hundred other factors?

Then I learned that I am where I am, and earning the kind of money that I am earning, because of those things that I have done, and especially, those things that I have not done.

Your income is determined by your ability to add value in your job. The greater the value of your contribution, your service to others, the greater is the amount that you are paid. If you want to increase the amount that you are being paid, your rewards, you must increase the amount that you are contributing, your input or value.

What are you worth? This is determined by your knowledge, skills, ability, and especially, your willingness to apply your knowledge and skills over and over again to get results that people value. In The world of business and income, the only thing that matters is results. It is not how well you get along with others, or how popular you are at work. All that matters is your ability to make a valuable contribution to your company and your customers, right where you are.

If you want to increase your worth, you must increase your ability to add value. The only way that you can do this is by learning and practicing new skills. When you read regularly, listen to audio programs in your car, attend seminars, and take additional courses in your field, you increase your value and eventually, you increase your worth to others. This will soon be reflected by the market in the size of your paycheck.

When I learned this I was amazed. What it meant was that I could increase my income as much as I wanted by simply increasing my value. From that day onward, I became a passionate, life-long student of personal and professional development. I read hundreds and then thousands of books. I subscribe today to 35 magazines per week and read them cover to cover. I read four newspapers per day, listen to audio programs, watch DVD’s in my field, and take additional courses online.

And do you know what happens? Every time I learn and apply a new skill, I get better results, and earn more money. And this turns out to be true for everyone, everywhere, in every situation.
